  3.  The UFO phenomena has been with us for a long time. In the Bible
  4. you can read of Ezekiel's encounter with one that he calls a
  5. vision (Ezekiel 1:1).  Perhaps it was a vision, perhaps not. If
  6. it was a vision, I find it interesting that Ezekiel could
  7. conceptualize such a flying craft as he described considering the
  8. state of technology available at that time.  Nevertheless, we
  9. shall never know if it was in fact a real machine or a vision.
  10. We view stories such as this as myth or legend.
  11.  
  12.  If we were to find some writings from some other ancient and
  13. extinct culture that told of an encounter similar to Ezekiel's;
  14. we probably would not call it 'a fact that lends credibility to
  15. Ezekiel's encounter as something real and not imagined."  We
  16. would probably say it was a 'perpetuation of a myth'.
  17.  
  18.  There are many writings and glyphics from ancient civilizations
  19. such as Sumerian, Babylonian, Akkadian, Hittite, Incan and Mayan
  20. that tell of or depict men whose home is in the heavens and the
  21. unusual "boats" or "chariots" they use to travel back and forth
  22. between the Earth and heavens.  Is it just coincidence that man
  23. needs to creates these similar myths? Or have these stories
  24. simply been passed along from one civilization to another even
  25. somehow crossing the Atlantic to South America? Or did something
  26. real and physical happen to these civilizations?
  27.  
  28.  There is enough evidence available to support either the myth or
  29. the fact. It all depends on how you want to view the evidence. We
  30. can't provide any definite, indisputable evidence since the
  31. peoples who wrote these stories are no longer with us. So it's up
  32. to each of us, individually, to examine the evidence for
  33. ourselves and reach our own conclusions.

  35.  In UFOlogy today, we hear reports that tell us that the UFOs are
  36. controlled by evil, four foot tall, gray skinned aliens who
  37. mutilate cattle and abduct humans. We also hear the UFOs are
  38. piloted by an intelligence that is benevolent and only wants us
  39. to mature and evolve into a higher state of consciousness.
  40.  
  41.  I don't think we could ask for nor create, two more diverse
  42. extremes. These extremes create an umbrella under which all UFO
  43. speculations reside.
  44.  
  45.  Many of us here share a common bond, or, put more precisely, a
  46. common question.  That is: what is truth to these UFOs?
  47.  
  48.  One truth I can say with reasonable confidence is that the
  49. majority of people have never had, nor ever will have a true UFO
  50. experience.  This is unfortunate because it's always nice to be
  51. able to have a large number of people at your side when you're
  52. trying to prove something. So how does one go about proving the
  53. existence of something as elusive as UFO's?
  54.  
  55.  If you've had a UFO experience, whether good or bad, I'd say
  56. that would probably be a pretty darned good convincer. But is
  57. your experience enough to convince some stranger as to the
  58. reality of UFO's?  How would you feel if after having a UFO
  59. encounter you were laughed at by everyone you told? I think it
  60. would take your self esteem down a few notches and I don't think
  61. you would talk about it anymore.
  62. Why are people so prone to laugh at those who claim to have UFO
  63. encounters? I think it's because our society encourages critical
  64. thinking and discourages abstract thought except in the fine arts
  65. where abstract thought is appreciated. There are also people who
  66. will con, rob and cheat you so it's necessary for us to keep our
  67. guard up. Sad commentary, but true.
  68.  
  69.  Part of our society's foundation is built upon science. The
  70. creations of our science permeate almost every aspect of our
  71. lives every day.  Our science has a proven track record and it's
  72. been very good to us but because of this, we become more
  73. dependent upon science, elevating it to almost a philosophy. Is
  74. this good or bad? It should be noted that for a couple thousand
  75. years that the Earth was flat and at the center of the solar
  76. system. This was undeniable fact until one day the science of the
  77. times proved it wrong and suddenly the Earth became spherical and
  78. took it's rightful place in the solar system. All this means is
  79. that science can make mistakes and science itself can evolve,
  80. change and mature, and with it, the ideals of mankind.

  82.  When we bring all speculations covered by this UFO umbrella
  83. under the lamp of science, what do we have to see? Not much.
  84. The first thing science will do is to clean up these suppositions
  85. by throwing out the ones our science can't deal with. The first
  86. casualty will be the space brothers theory. Sorry, but there's no
  87. room for it within our science. But is this proper? From the
  88. viewpoint of our science, yes, no doubt about it. From the
  89. viewpoint of UFOlogy in general, no, it's not fair, but that's
  90. just the way it is.

  92.  It's just possible that our present science may be flawed, but
  93. it's all we've got right now. Currently there are things going on
  94. in the world of quantum mechanics and the implications read like
  95. science fiction! But the science we have right now, today, is all
  96. we've got and it is through this science we must rely to help us
  97. solve the UFO mystery.
  98.  
  99.  So although there are many "theories" about UFOs, the only ones
  100. our science can deal with are the ones that are real, physical
  101. and tangible and this is where we must get our science to
  102. investigate. If we can get science to prove the existence of
  103. UFOs, then score one for us. And there's always the possibility
  104. that science will discover something that will help it change its
  105. way of thinking and open up new realms to things which today are
  106. laughed at.

  108.  Science seems to be governed by the process of natural selection.
  109. What doesn't work dies, what does, prospers.
  110.  
  111.  No matter what ones personal beliefs are, we must all encourage
  112. science to continue to discover itself, to continue to evolve.
  113. Because the truth is, as science evolves, so do we.  I feel that
  114. someday the things we call paranormal will all be explained by
  115. science; but not the science we're familiar with today.  I hope
  116. that I'm around to see it.
